Solutions

  • Password protect all accounts to secure safety (Moore, 2015).
  • Become aware of any incoming emails, phone calls, and texts that ask for personal information(Moore, 2015).
  • Have your computer checked by a professional  if you think you are a target (Moore, 2015).
  • Take action if you think you are being cyber stalked even if you think it is not a big deal (Moore, 2015).
  • Do not accept any unfamiliar requests on any social media accounts.
  • Call the police about it, describe the problem and if you know who it is then tell them their name.
  • If you know who the cyber stalker is and even tho they haven't bothered you offline yet you could get a restraining order.
  • The Consquenses


  • Cyber stalking is taken seriously just like stalking and you can get the same charges depending on what is happening (Working to halt online abuse, 2010)
  • Cyber stalking is usually classes as a misdemeanour, but can become a felony(Free Advice Legal, 2015).
  • If someone were to threat bodily injury or who directs communication to a minor under 16 years of age would get a third degree felony punishment (Free Advice Legal, 2015).
  • Stalking has even become a crime in every state in Australia (Is stalking a crime?, n.d)
  • If you were to report your stalker to the police, the stalker can then become arrested and charged and need to appear in court (Is stalking a crime?, n.d).

    Illegal or just Unethical?

  • Stalking is illegal therefore Cyber Stalking is also illegal because like in person, stalkers can become dangerous even online. (Domestic violence resource centre Victoria, 2013).
  • The police can be contacted if you feel you are being stalked online(Domestic violence resource centre Victoria, 2013).
  • Stalking your girlfriend or boyfriend, or even ex is illegal in Victoria (Domestic violence resource centre Victoria, 2013).
  • Cyber stalking becomes a crime when it involves any of these:
    • using the internet or phone in a threatening way, harassing or offensive way.
    • Any type of Threats
    • accessing internet accounts without an approval of the account owner
    • Defamation.

    Cyberstalking: A Definition

  • Cyber Stalking is using any type of electronic communication to repeatedly harass or scare someone (Rouse, 2007).
  • Cyber Stalking is a very serious, growing problem around the world that can affect many men and woman. (A New Challenge for Law Enforcement and Industry, 1999).
  • One in every 12 woman (8.2 million) and one in every 45 men (2 million) have been the victim of a stalker at least once in their lives. (A New Challenge for Law Enforcement and Industry, 1999).
  • The aim of any stalker is to harass or even cause harm and distress to their victim. A stalker could be someone you know or  even some one you have never met before.(A New Challenge for Law Enforcement and Industry, 1999).
  • Stalking has always been a very serious problem, but even tho Stalkers are now on the Internet they can still cause just as much harm or stress (Quality nonsense Ltd, n.d)
